The in-depth discussion of trends makes for truly fascinating reading. But to me, the biggest value of this book is the information provided on how to become more observant in your daily life and see the patterns and developing trends all around. This is a book that I’ll refer back to often.

I've read Non-Obvious for each of the past three years. It is a great way to be in the right mindset for the coming year and to be ahead of the curve for your business offerings.

I have been fortunate to read an early copy of the book and two things really stuck out for me on first review. 1) Muddled Masculinity and 2) Deliberate Downgrading. Since I have read previous version of Non-Obvious I skipped over the first three sections that describe trend curation and went looks for topics that might apply to me. In the past six months I have replaced "high tech" items in my home with lower tech substitutes simply to reduce the number of "tech calls" I get at work from both older and younger visitors to our home. At first it seems fun to automate all kinds of things and control them from your phone but after something breaks or stops working (think computer controlled light switches) it is sometimes easier to just go back to a simple mechanical switch and get back some time. The second section I found very interesting, Muddled Masculinity, is playing out in my work place as we read. I am no longer a young man and a "coach" a few men and women at work and I see a few ideas of role or what a man or a woman should do crop up at work. It is also complicated by a growing off-shore work force that has both different cultural and historical roles for each sex and even after you see the barriers start to break down, if people feel confused or challenged they retreat to old norms. Rohit's advise to focus and spend a bit more time "innovating with compassion" is a good way forward. I once again enjoyed this series and will revisit some of the topics as the year progresses.

I got a copy of Rohit Bhargava's Non-Obvious (2019) version in exchange for an honest review. In releases from prior years, I've bought and read the e-version. With the 2019 release, I read a physical copy.If you prefer printed books as I do, I recommend a physical copy. Unlike some books I've read, it works well in either print or as an e-book, but the printed version is manageable, feels good in-hand, can be annotated in the margins (if you're into that kind of thing), and is set up in a way that's easy to navigate through. This is a book that can be read and taken in snacksized chunks or cover to cover. There's little fluff and every page has an interesting or useful idea or three--I read marketing(ish)/business books on occasion and this (along with Culturematic by Grant McCracken) are worth every penny or minute of time for the ideas alone. If you're a person who values inspiration and ideas, the book is a way to jack, matrix-style, into Rohit's brain. Some trend books are entertaining to read, but stop short of application and implication. This one won't solve problems and generate applications of insight and trends for you, but it will give you some practical thoughtstarters to land these trends in a way that shapes business actions and decisions. This book is really a tool for more productive creativity and challenger thinking disguised as a trend book--it illuminates ideas and tees up possibilities for application. From there, it's up to you.Non-Obvious is organized into 4 sections:1) Rohit's trend curation technique (and how to adopt it or approximate what he does for yourself)2) This year's 15 trends, as spotted over 2018 by Rohit (each one is described, brought to life with examples, and has a couple of potential business or brand applications/implications)3) Guidance and guardrails for acting on trends4) Trends identified during years past (2011-2018)Though there's fresh material annually, this is not a book you need to buy/read every year. Prior to 2019, I'd read 2011 (the first year, I believe), and 2015. A periodic refresh feels about right. Trends need some breathing room to take root and grow or die out.I can't say which section of the book is the most valuable because it depends on what your need from the book is. What I find most useful isn't the trends themselves, but the examples and evidence of them. That helps me arrive at recommendations, implications, applications that make the ideas underlying the trends relevant to my clients' business. If I was going to make a couple of suggestions to Rohit and his team for future editions:i) Organize the last section by grade/efficacy and tag the year, rather than going year by year. For at least the A list (and maybe B+) that are still holding, update the examples so they stay useful and relevant.ii) Consider casting the net wider on the reading list/websites/resources. Consider adding some that are interesting, curiosity-stoking, and challenging, but not obviously 'in the field,' so to speak: Ted Talks, podcasts, BrainPickings, Atlas Obscura, Mental Floss, Fast Company.Kudos though--this book is chock-full of culturally-relevant ideas and jumping-off inspiration points. I look forward to seeing how it evolves in future years.

Rohit's Non-Obvious books are always engaging and intriguing. It's the first book I read each year and this year I pre-ordered 30 copies for colleagues and friends on Amazon. Checked the box that it was a gift and created customized notes. Why this book? It’s fresh and he prompts cognitive dissonance, creative thinking and it ignites lots of "how will these trends impact our industry and my company?" It also causes me to ask, how can I leverage these insights before competitors to gain that first-mover advantage?Rohit dives into content that crosses industry boundaries and the actual art and science of curating trends (sounds boring, it’s actually interesting as he shares how they’re identified, how they are often false or short lived and how to avoid sinking into nonsense). He explains what a trend is and his aim (to notice details that other miss). Rohit "thinks differently," I enjoy that his focus is observing the accelerating present and how trends intersect multiple industries, behaviors and beliefs. Learned about flip thinking and how it applies to challenges I face. Rohit notes that "Individualism" is on the rise in the US (this growing trend directly impacts my role and our product focus). His deep dive into "Legacy brands and trust" was insightful as was the trend of "dumbing down of devices for consumers." I concur 100% with his observations and importance of "Empathy" and found the "Passive Loyalty" interesting and very timely.I particularly enjoy how Rohit reflects back on previously examined trends and provides updates. If you're a Decision Maker, Visionary, Product Innovator or Entrepreneur, I highly recommend Non-Obvious.
