About the Author
Larry Newman is the Founder and Director of Children's Music Workshop. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude degree from Temple University's College of Music, a California teaching credential and a Master of Arts in Music Performance from Eastern Illinois University. In 2012, Mr. Newman received that institution's "Outstanding Graduate Alumni" award. Formerly an instrumental music teacher in the Philadelphia School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Santa Monica-Malibu Public Schools, Mr. Newman has supervised music programs in more than eighty public and private institutions from the Kindergarten through college levels. His rich diversity of experience includes schools from East L.A. to Malibu and from South Central L.A. to the San Fernando Valley. Larry Newman is a three-time Los Angeles area Emmy award winner and five-time Emmy nominee for his annual television special - Orchestra Kids. The documentary features the All School Elementary Honor Orchestra and their annual concerts from UCLA's reonowned Schoenberg Concert Hall. Mr. Newman was recently honored by the Los Angeles City Council at City Hall for his contributions to music education in Los Angeles. He was also featured on CityView's Channel 35 series, "Faces of LA". Mr. Newman is a recipient of the Lori Petrick Excellence in Education Award from the Palisades Charter Schools Foundation. The award is underwritten by the Boone Foundation - a philanthropic group whose mission is to support "passionate people who provide excellent programs to youth". Larry Newman was also one of 40 teachers nominated for the 25th Annual BRAVO Award, established in 1982 by the Music Center of Los Angeles County to recognize individuals for innovation and excellence in arts education. Excellent beginner books for the violin or viola player in their first or second year. Larry Newman has an entire series of music books for violin, viola and cello that are all excellent for players in their first few years. I would not consider these lesson books, but books to supplement beginner players to learn more popular songs. For my young boys, I have the Don't Fret colored finger guide on their 1/4 and 1/2 violins. Then to help them find the correct notes, I will sometimes use a blue, yellow, pink and green or orange highlighter to color the notes on sheet music. I know it's a learning crutch, but it makes finding and playing the correct note faster and easier....the more positive feedback they get in playing a correct note, the longer they stay with learning music and different musical instruments (I hope). I also like the books because the songs are also easy enough for the beginner player to start memorizing songs too. Between the cello, violin and viola, I think we own all of them.
I got this for me and the cello version for my mom. We both JUST started playing as adult-learners, though she is a little ahead of me by a few months, and she is starting to learn some of the tunes. I got to hear the sound of the duet version when we went to a lesson and the teacher played the violin accompaniment. Our teacher really liked the books and thanked me for showing her something she hadn't seen before. Hopefully in the next couple months my mother and I can play "Ode to Joy" together and I can update my review to let you all know how that goes. :-)Without having played myself I can say that my mom still thinks this is challenging even though it says "Easy", but it is something she (and hopefully soon I!) can work with. It is nice that the notes are so easy to read. This is great for beginners, people with poor vision, kids, seniors... and I like it because I am just learning how to read music and this makes each note so clearly visible.Hopefully this review helps and hope you enjoy the book if you decide to try it out. :-)
I like the selection of songs in this book and I bought several to use with my elementary violin students. I subscribe to the "play more and enjoy now; you can learn the intricacies in Middle/High School" theory. I want students to have success playing and wanting more. However, I found it much easier to rewrite some of the music in this book to keep my students in first position. Violins are sharp-keyed instruments. Moving "America, the Beautiful" up one step from the Key of C to the Key of D makes for much easier playing! You're still using three strings, students are still reading music, and I'm not ready to cover the half-steps yet. I try to get my students playing as much familiar music as possible the easiest way around. They enjoy the success of playing without long discussions about key and special fingering. Save that for Middle School students.I also prefer to have students play on the D and A strings, with only some E playing. It's easier on the ears! So, I've transposed a few songs down. So songs with 1 sharp, no sharps, or in the flat keys are all getting transposed.I hope this helps.
What a GREAT book for learning nice classic like music and having a fun and very pretty accompaniment to play with my students. They enjoy this book. It has the key signatures of C, D, G, F major all in a very big print notation. It is very friendly, challenging on certain pieces, but very rewarding as they make great recital pieces too.
Liked the selections, and the format. It will be a valuable resource.
Fun for my 9 year old
I am an adult beginner, and my granddaughter started elementary school orchestra last year. We found several duets in here that we could play together.
There is a nice variety of songs which are printed in easy to read large notation. This is an excellent resource for practicing sight reading with your younger students.
