I got this book years ago. I don't paint a lot of flowers, but when I do, I find this book of great value.it is a small sized book, and some people feel this is a negative thing. I find this book to be a good size for travel. I used it as a reference book for flower types, colors, species and habitats.iv lent it out several times, and once gave a copy as a gift. everyone loved it. two people did not want to give it back. I got this book on clearance when borders went out of business, and Im so glad to have it. its held up well after ten years of use, so its a well made book. mine is spiral bound. I think this is why it's held up so well.one thing though, its not a book that shows you how to paint flowers. you will learn a little bit about painting flowers but its most valuable when you want to have a particular type or color of flower in your paintings.
I love that about 70% of this book is step by step instructions on how to paint flowers in watercolour. Many watercolour books only have vague tips that are helpful in watercolour overall but don't teach you how to paint specific things. This book has both! The writing and images are clear and helpful. I think this book would be useful to all but the most advanced floral watercolour painters. I can't wait to complete all the flower paintings. Very pleased with this book.
Love the book and it's instructions but since I bought the Kindle version I didn't realize that it would not be in color. A little senseless to buy a how-to Watercolor book that you can only see in Black's white.
I received this book as a gift. I think it has its pros and cons. That's why I didn't give 5 stars.Pros: 1. has a great varieties of flowers. 2. teaches you different shapes and colors.3. provide great example of artworks from different artists and styles. 4. gives you general idea about paint, brushes, masking fluid, etc.Cons: 1.Doesn't progress in teaching. All the example are to the same degree of detail, which is not very detail. 2. Repeated color and shapes. Each color has many example, but they are very similar. Sometimes some flowers will be repeated in different color. But from a learning point of view, you don't learn much new things with different example.I found it helpful when I am using it as reference to explore new flowers that I haven't paint before. The general color guide is helpful so that I don't try to mix too many colors and make mud. But I also try to not just copy the example and go further with the steps. I attached a couple flowers that I did with the guide. Hope you have fun painting too.
I wanted to learn to make beautiful watercolor flower paintings and I found the right book! It has such beautifully detailed info on each flower and tells you what colors to mix to paint each kind realistically. This is my "go to" textbook for flower painting now.
I've learnt so much from this book. The step-by-step instructions are clear and some of the exercises seem relatively easy. However, I found that the steps aren't illustrated so well.... For example, in step2, you paint something, only to realise that step 3 doesn't connect, as if you should have done something extra in step 2 that was not explained.... that is quite confusing for me. Also, the style of the flowers also seems really old school .... not very contemporary. Even then, this is my go-to step-by-step resource and I think because of it, I'm so much better at watercolor than when I'd just begun. So I do recommend this book for absolute beginners.
There is a lot of info packed into this small book! The most basic info is also included: color, composition, painting techniques, paper and supplies, etc. so beginners will benefit, too. As an intermediate painter but new to flowers, I found it to be extremely helpful. I especially liked the Flower Painters Palette page that lists recommended paints with the "must have" colors noted. The flowers are grouped according to color. Each kind of flower includes 3- or 4-step how-to-paint illustrations listing paint colors used. This book contains a wealth of information, about 140 plants--flowers, leaves and berries--are represented within its 192 pages including a 3-page index. I like the wire-spiro binding, the book lays flat. Highly recommend it to those wanting to learn how to paint flowers. There are examples of many artists' work in addition to the how-to illustrations exposing the reader to a variety of styles. This book is printed in full color (and nicely printed.) It's small size was not a problem for me, I learned a lot and find this a great addition to my reference library.
Love this book. Not only is it spiral bound but also made solid and just the right size to throw in a hand bag to take with you to read anywhere. There are 192 pages of colorful flowers and step by step instructions to paint them. I will use this book often. I recommend to anyone wanting to learn how to paint flowers in watercolor.
It's a very small book, so pay attention to the size. I do like spiral bindery. I wanted to give it as a gift for a new painter and there wasn't enough 'how to' illustrations so I returned it.
